i wrote this kinda as song a long time ago but it works better as a poem type thing. my dad tells me the house is technically still there but the garden is definitely gone.

lyrics
(garden)//
descend below clouds as the plane jumps around
we land in JFK and it’s raining
a pretty forgettable day in june
on the way to my grandfather’s funeral
rent a car, hop on the long island expressway
guess my dad didn’t wanna deal with the train
we stayed at his tiny house in watermill
couldn’t admit how empty it seemed
his ashes were dumped in the garden near some asparagus seeds
even though a lot of people wanted them scattered on the beach
when i was a kid we visited every summer for a week
it was only three miles from flying point beach
my brother and i ate berries from the vine
while our grandpa grilled corn every night
i used a camera to take pictures of birds in flight
cried when i learned you can't expose film to sunlight
every year we took a family picture out front
one day i’ll find every single one
i looked up the house on a satellite map
someone bought it and knocked it down
tore out the garden and dug up the grass
beautiful things are never allowed to last
